November 29th

Today we will start the class by brainstorming potential careers in the communications field. After you brainstorming session I would like you to choose a potential field to research.

1. List 3 schools that offer the post-secondary education necessary to work in this area, for each one answer the following.
a.) What are the names, location, and program names
b.) What are the prerequisites for these programs
c.) What is the cost of tuition per year, and the total cost of the program
d.) What about their program makes them unique? Do they offer a co-op, etc.
e.) Are there additional costs such as tuition, ancillary fees, etc.

2. Now find 3 job postings for this area on job search engines such as monster, canada gov. job bank, workopolis, etc. Look for "entry level jobs" with approx. 3 years of experience.
              a.) Where is the job?
b.) What is the starting salary?

Once you are finished the above you can catch up on some of your photography work or your photoshop work.

November 26th

Today in class we are going to be talking about lighting. I will give you a demonstration on fill lighting, bounce cards, back lighting and the we will talk about the difference between fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs.

While you are waiting for this demonstration, research ISO. What is ISO? Why do we use it in photography? (At least 3-4 sentences in YOUR OWN WORDS). If you finish this and are waiting for me, you can borrow a camera and take two identifical photos, one with a low ISO (around 80) and one with a very high ISO (around 1600). What differences do you notice in the photos? Look closely at the image, especially in the shadows.

After the demonstration we will watch this clip:

November 21st

Today I'd like you to watch the following ted talk and respond to the following:

TedTalk

What are your initial reactions to the video?

How do you think photography can create a narrative?

How do you think photography connects us?

What was your favourite image from the video and why?

After this, go to National Geographic and search through the photos of the day. Choose 3 photos that demonstrate the rule of thirds, 1 that demonstrates a shallow DOF and 1 that demonstrates that a far DOF.

After this you can sign out a camera and take 5 photos today that are examples of the rule of thirds.

November 19th

Hello and Happy Tuesday!

I hope you had a great weekend. Today we will start with looking at reviewing our knowledge of the rule of thirds, and looking at Aperture and Shutter Speed. I will give you a demonstration in class on using the 2 (on AV and TV mode) and then you will get to go out and take your own photos around the school (if the weather is nice you can go outside, if not, you can stay inside but you must NOT disturb any classes).

After the Presentation

Please take the following:
1 photo with a shallow DOF (small aperture number)
1 photo with a Deep  DOF (big aperture number)
1 photo with a fast shutter speed
1 photo with a slow shutter speed
*While you are doing this, please consider the rule of thirds and be sure to apply it to your photo that has a shallow DOF

Please post the 4 photos to your blog (with a title underneath), and answer the following:
Did the photos turn out how you expected, why or why not?

Are you happy with the results?

Which photo was the most successful?

November 15th

Today we will be starting our unit on digital photography. We will start by looking at photography rule #1: The rule of thirds.

(after presentation)

You are going to practise using the rule of thirds by CROPPING photos and improving their composition.
1. Click on each thumbnail to download the full size version of each photo.
2. Use iPhoto to crop each photo in TWO DIFFERENT WAYS using the rule of thirds. BE  SURE TO USE THE THUMBNAIL VERSION OF THIS!
3. Upload your finished photos to your blog with the title "Rule of Thirds".

Once you have finished cropping the above photos, find 2 great example of the rule of thirds using Google Image search and post them to your blog.  Please explain why the photos follow the rule of thirds. For better quality photos, go to advanced search-and change the image size to a min of 1024 x 768. Instead of searching "rule of thirds" trying looking up Ansel Adams or National Geographic for some great examples of photos.

If you are done all of the above, make sure that you do the reflection from Thursday's blog about your responses to your survey.

November 14th

Today you are finishing your work from last class. You must finish your survey, then set up your blogger account and respond to the blog questions from November 14th. After that you can respond to other surveys.

If you finish the above, you can respond to the following on your blog:

1. Which question results surprised you the most? Why is this? (Copy & paste a chart from google responses).

2. Which question results did not surprise you? Why were they not a surprise? (copy & paste a chart from google responses).

November 12th

Good morning!
Welcome to Comm Tech. You are going to learn a lot, do a lot, and create a lot of projects that are founded in communications. Right now, you've already heard me explain the syllabus, and give you a basic idea of what communications technology is and why there is a course designed around it. What I'd like you to do next, is the following:

1.  Fill out the survey that is in your Rockway Gmail account.
2.  Set up your own survey using a Form in your Google Drive. The survey should be questions to find out how those around you communicate/ interact with communications technology. I will give you a demonstration in class on how to do this. You must send your form to everyone in the class.

3. Next you may respond to other surveys that were sent to you.

If you finish all of the above, you may move on to the following:

4. Create your own blog on Blogger. I will give you a demonstration on how to do this but here are some step by step directions.

Steps for setting up your blog

1.      Sign into your Rockway Google Apps Account

2.      Click on Blogger (it will be in a drop down menu at the top of your screen).

3.      Choose a Blogger Profile (not a Google + profile).

4.      Your display name should be your first name and last initial, i.e. TraceyM (you should    unclick receive announcements to avoid annoying spam).

5.      You have now created a Blogger Dashboard, this is where you can add other blogs to your reading list. Click Create new blog.

6.      The title of your blog should be first name and last intial, commtech13, i.e. Traceymcommtech13

7.      The address should be the same as your title.

8.      Choose your layout.
9. Once you have finished this, please respond to the following:
       A. What blogging experience, if any, do you have?
  B. Do you generally read blogs, if so, what are they about? Find 3 examples to blogs that  would interest  you and post them on your blog.
  C. Please answer, in 3-5 sentences, why you took this course and what you are most looking forward to.
10. Once you have finished everything, you can play with the format of your blog. Customize it by changing the layout and colours and making it your own.
11. If you have done EVERYTHING, then you can fill out surveys that your classmates have sent you.
